Culture Classes Learn Umóⁿhoⁿ Ways

On Friday, Sept. 15,  Ms. Latonda Morris and Rex Webster, Elementary Culture Apprentices, took the K through 5th grade Culture Classes to a field experience. The trip was to the Native American Church, across the street from UNPS. The students were invited to learn about the significance of the tipi to the NAC of the Umóⁿhoⁿ Tribe.  The students learned about the waterdrum, canvas, poles, and the fire. The waterdrum represents Jesus. The canvas represents Jesus’s robe. The poles represent his disciples. The fire represents a Grandpa, who helps people with light and with heat, to keep us warm. Grandpa Rufus White also told Umóⁿhoⁿ stories about each tipi article and their significance in our culture.
