J-Squad

The Chief’s Football Squad traveled to Marty, SD on Thursday, October 12 to take on the Marty Braves. The Chiefs dominated from start to finish as they pounded the Braves 54-zip! Yowza–That sounds like a good ol’ fashioned woodshed beating. The boys battled more than just the Marty Braves that day as they played in freezing cold rain and 40 mph wind gusts. According to starting center Travis Phillips, “It came down like hail.” The rain never let up and neither did the Chiefs. They kept playing in the miserable conditions because there was a job that needed to be finished.

This week (TODAY) the Chiefs will have a big test as they face the 5-1 Lower Brule Sioux. This battle will take place at the Wade Miller Memorial Sports Complex on Thursday Oct 19. Kickoff is scheduled for 4:00 P.M. Lets get some Q and A from the Ol’ Ball Coach.

Coach’s Corner Wiff Matt:

J-Squad: Any game balls to give out from the Hurricane Bowl last week vs Marty?

Coach Matt: Game balls could go to everyone who played because they showed up, played hard, and had a blast. Rain games might be cold and messy, but they are always a lot of fun. It was great to see all of the guys, even the ones who weren’t able to play, enjoying the crazy weather.

J-Squad: Did our boys embrace the elements last week vs. Marty?

Coach Matt: Absolutely! Guys brought extra socks and clothes so they could change after the mess. We had some huddled under a towel during the game, but everyone who played got the brand new white jerseys dirty and, besides winning, that was the goal. *Get a win and get dirty doing it. Even had a handful jump in a giant puddle of water after the game.

J-Squad: Did our coaches embrace the elements last week vs. Marty?

Coach Matt: I’d say we were all pretty shocked just how much it rained on us and how hard it dumped at certain points. We were all soaked through within the first 10 minutes of warmups, but I enjoyed it. It was worth the cold. If I had brought an entire vacation suitcase of clothes like Coach Sjuts, I’d have jumped in the puddle with those guys!

J-Squad: What are the strengths of Lower Bule?

Coach Matt: They’re the defending champs for a reason. They’re big, they’re strong, and they play hard. They have a lot of kids. Our guys have played tough all season and it’s going to be a test but, if they show up this week, get eligible, and don’t act scared to play the game, I think we can hang with the defending champs.

J-Squad: Without giving away any top secret information-will there be any kind of aerial attack in the LB game plan? Or will it be more of a ground and pound mentality?

Coach Matt: If contacts are in eyes, we could see a good mix of plays for us this Thursday. But, we’ll stick with what works. We need to slow things down and make sure we wrap-up and gang tackle on defense.

J-Squad: We know you care a lot about winning ball games… but you are obviously so much more than just a ball coach… Your thoughts on winning the Gildersleeve, Stoddard, and Stone Award?

Coach Matt: It’s a great honor to have been nominated and to receive this award, and I can’t thank everyone enough for their support and kind words. I’m excited about it, definitely, and I’m looking forward to it motivating me to keep working harder as both a teacher and a coach.

J-Squad: Our readers would like to know - was the trip to the pumpkin patch last Friday considered a success?

Coach Matt: I got there a little later than I hoped, but it was a great time with my family. My nephew got a 32 lb pumpkin and I had some great BBQ!

J-Squad: 32 pounds?  Did that fit in the trunk?  If you could lead a parade through Pickinpaugh’s office, what type would it be?

Coach Matt: Lol it did! Have you seen the trunk on a Grand Caravan? That baby got back! A championship parade with a special guest, my tattoo artist from back home. That way we could celebrate a title and give Pickinpaugh some new ink all at once.

There ya have it… Can our boy Matt coach speak or what?  Everybody, do us a favor - blow up Matt’s email and tell him what a good interview he is! Come on folks… let’s hear it for MATT! Seriously, we thank him for all of his time and effort he puts into helping out the J-Squad.

*New: Quote of the Interview - as voted on by the J-Squad

The winner is: ‘Get a win and get dirty doing it’ - by Matt. T-shirt material??

And now back by popular demand! -

Food Truck Facts with Fehringer!!!

We would like to thank Mike for taking the time to chat with us… when we caught up with him he was busy as a bee getting things ready for the truck. Let’s just say he wasn’t overjoyed to see us coming.

J-Squad: Are you getting things ready for the truck?

Fehringer: Yes

J-Squad: Do you have any hot deals today?

Fehringer: Yes, the hotdogs will be hot.

J-Squad: Do you sell Sour Patch Kids out of the truck?

Fehringer: (Deer in the headlights look-no response)

J-Squad: Do you have to have a special license to drive that thing?

Fehringer: No comment

Well, that’s all we have for you today!  Get over and cheer on the Chiefs so we can get that Dub!
