Lady Chiefs Basketball

The Lady Chiefs won their first Sub District game on Tuesday, February 13th vs. Bago! The score was 56-35! Our girls struggled a bit in the first half as we were down 22-18 - But the Ol’ Ball Coach corrected that - Our girls responded by out-scoring Bago 27- 4 in the third quarter. That must have been an epic half-time speech by Matt. We asked him what he told the team but he said it was all ‘classified.’ We did catch up with senior Lish McCauley though. “It was a great win,” stated Lish. “We worked as a team and got our chemistry together. Now onto the next game!” Tonight the ladies travel to West Point High to face the West Point Cadets for the Sub District Title! We tried to get a quote from legendary assistant Brad Vogt but he was unavailable for comment. Apparently, he was busy working on his lesson plans for next week. Luckily, however, we were able to sit down with The Ol’ Ball Coach himself for some quick Q & A!

J-Squad: What Up Matt? It’s been a minute.

Matt: Not a lot. I’m multitasking as usual. Just sitting here answering your questions. Also drinking a hot cup of coffee, and filling out a 2024 NFL Mock Draft Simulation. Contemplating life’s meaning and what it’s all about.

J-Squad: We heard that you cooked up some tamales over Christmas break?  Were they stellar?

Matt: They were incredible! Homemade. And, for breakfast on Christmas morning, we fried them in a pan and had them with coffee. Talk about a great cultural experience.

J-Squad: When are you going to cook some up for Peck?

Matt: Well, I planned on saving him  a couple, but they didn’t last. I’ll ask the wife if she can make some more sometime in the future.

J-Squad: What is our record as of now?

Matt: As of today, we are 13-10.

J-Squad: If you could describe the season in one word what would it be?

Matt: Growth. When you look at the roster, we’re a young team. Even with the seniors, they’ve all grown as well. The season has had its ups and downs, but through all of it, there has been growth. The important thing within that growth is growing up. There have been many lessons learned, hopefully, in growth and the need for growing up as varsity athletes and leaders.

J-Squad: Ummmm… that was like 66 words Matt…Can you give us a highlight of the season so far?

Matt: It’d be a toss-up between the Oakland game and winning DOC at THE World’s Only Corn Palace. And of course our win on Tuesday vs Winnebago!

J-Squad: Wow...We ask for one highlight and he gives us three!  Does this guy ever stop overachieving? Has the team been living up to your expectations?

Matt: There is always room for improvement, even with state championship teams. I expect that we will show up, commit to working hard, show great effort, attitude, and trust, and finish the season working to achieve our goals until the very end.

J-Squad: How are the freshmen looking as a group?

Matt: They are doing a great job, I’ve enjoyed coaching them this year. You can see the improvement in the little things, but what excites me the most is the improvement in their self-confidence. All four of them have seen varsity minutes, which is huge for their development. They just have to keep showing up and keep being confident.

Thanks Coach!  We always enjoy spending time with you and we appreciate you taking the time for our readers! Good luck tonight!!  Go Lady Chiefs!!!
