The Chiefs ended homecoming week with a big win against the Mclaughlin Mustangs on Friday, Sept. 29. The team played through the extreme heat - but Coach Hudnall had the boyz hydrated for this one as the mighty Chiefs stayed strong. The Mustangs, on the other hand, were cramping by the 2nd quarter. The game was interesting ‘for a little while’ as Mclaughlin scored on the opening drive of the game. But the Chiefs didn’t panic. The boyz answered right back with a drive of their own that ended with a TD  pass from Rylon to Frankie. It went a little something like this.

Coach Sjuts: (chewing gum and biting nails) Do you want the Rooski, sir?

Coach Hudds: (calm, cool, and collected) No, Mikey… Give me ‘Strong…

Coach Sjuts: (in a panic) "But it’s 4th and a mile, sir! We should punt if you ask me!"

Coach Hudds: (putting a gentle hand on Mike’s shoulder) I'm not asking you, Coach Sjuts - We only live once! Now, give me ‘Strong Left, 4-5-0, POST, CORNER, FLY!’

And the rest as they say, is history. From there on out it was clear sailing - with the ‘in game’ adjustments made by coach Hudnall and his staff, the Chief’s mighty defense shut down the Stangs the rest of the game.  Final score: 50-6 in favor of the good guys.

Coach's Corner - Wiff Our Boy Matt:

J-Squad: Long time no see, coach. Talk to us baby girl. Give us some of that sweet ‘coach speak’ that our readers have come to expect. What are the keys to victory vs the Braves?

Coach Matt: It’s been a minute! Keys to a victory are found in some of our primary values. Control the controllables, have great Effort, Attitude, Trust (EAT), and respect 100. Other than that, take care of the football, do our jobs, and show up tough.

J-Squad: Things got a little chippy last game against Mclaughlin - Your thoughts?

Coach Matt: Ya, we talk about this type of stuff every day, every week, all season long. We can only control ourselves, we can’t control what other people think, say, or do - including referees. That’s not to say we don’t want our guys protecting themselves in situations of need as a team. When you get thrown out of games, protection or not, it hurts the team, so we always tell our guys to let those other teams deal with that. It’s tough because I know kids don’t want to look “weak,” but walking away should be seen as absolute strength and control of one’s self. A win is the best smack talk you can give.

J-Squad: The weather could be a factor in this one. The forecast is calling for wind and rain. What’s the plan to limit the turnovers?

Coach Matt: For sure, and I’m excited! The plan is to take care of the ball and play smart. We will focus on the basics and not get too carried away. With the wind that’s expected, not sure how much we’ll put the ball in the air but, we’ll take care of it if we do.

J-Squad: You are heavily favored in the ballgame. According to our sources (Vogt) some books have the Chiefs favored by as many as 5 touchdowns. Are you at all concerned about our players taking the Braves lightly?

Coach Matt: Always. That’s ALWAYS a concern. You can’t ever take a team too lightly because, the weather being a factor tomorrow, all it takes is a mistake or two to get you out of your groove or for you to lose that “mojo”, and a team favored to win falls behind. Like quicksand, things can build up and you fall further behind and all of a sudden, you stub your toe on a team you should beat.

J-Squad: Game on Thursday-are you gonna finna party hard on Friday?

Coach Matt: No parties for me, it’ll be back to work and preparation for Lower Brule next Thursday here in Macy. After, I hit a pumpkin patch with the family and future Mrs.

J-Squad: Well isn’t that special! Last question. Would you consider yourself a gatherer or a hunter? Please explain.

Coach Matt: I’d consider myself a “hunter-gatherer”, like some of my ancestors. If I needed to hunt, I could. I had to hunt for my girl, and now I’m getting married in May. I can definitely gather.  I think most people today are primarily gatherers. You all shop at Walmart, Target, or Aldi - and you aren’t hunting anything there. Now, you talk to Mr. Schmidt, he’d be a modern day “hunter”. He’s always hunting for cheap deals! Mr. Redden, I know he hunts old school, he’s always trying to bag big bucks.

Wowza- The Ol’ Ball Coach spilled his guts for us again!  And he used the word 'controllables' - Gotta love our boy Matt. Speaking of love - now it's time for some:
