Greetings!  We want to take this opportunity to update the public regarding the current COVID-19 status at Umonhon Nation Public School as of 9/28/2020.  Please be assured that we continue to work closely with our school nurse, Linda Calvillo, Carl T. Curtis, and the Northeast Nebraska Public Health Department. Linda is in constant contact and reports all staff cases with the health center and consults with them on isolation and quarantine. We diligently follow the contact tracing guidelines for self-monitoring and quarantine in an effort to stop/slow the spread of transmission. If we find through the contract tracing that you or your child have been in contact with someone who has tested positive, the school will contact you immediately. We have every reason to believe the extra safety precautions we have instituted are working well, as our risk dial has remained in the Yellow or moderate risk.  While the confidentiality and safety of our students and staff is of critical importance, it is important for the public to know we have a small number of staff and students who are currently under self-monitor/quarantine.  We currently have 1 staff confirmed positive case and 7 individuals who have been asked to self-monitor/quarantine simply as a safety precaution, 2 staff and 5 students.  If you have any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to contact the school for further information. How can you tell the difference between a cold and the flu? Because colds and flu share many symptoms, it can be difficult (or even impossible) to tell the difference between them based on symptoms alone. Special tests that usually must be done within the first few days of illness can tell if a person has the flu. What are the symptoms of the flu versus the symptoms of a cold? The symptoms of the flu can include fever or feeling feverish/chills, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, muscle or body aches, headaches and fatigue (tiredness). Cold symptoms are usually milder than the symptoms of the flu. People with colds are more likely to have a runny or stuffy nose. Colds generally do not result in serious health problems.

About 20 years ago I was serving as the Chief Negotiator for the Macy Education Association. We had scheduled a meeting which needed to be rescheduled and the announcement went out late. I somehow missed it and showed up for the meeting. Bertram Walker, who was serving as negotiator for the school, also missed the message and showed up. We were the only two there. I hardly knew him but he had a way to make you feel comfortable by just talking about everyday things. These things may seem unimportant but when they pile up they become obstacles to overcome within the school and life, he made me see that. We ended up spending around 45 minutes talking about Macy, school and life in general. I learned more from him in that short time than I ever did in any of my education classes. What I learned from him was real, relevant and having an effect on everything we were doing. Mr. Walker was an asset to the school and the community he will be missed by all. Joseph Schmidt

Red Ribbon Week is an alcohol, tobacco, and other drug and violence prevention awareness campaign observed annually in October in the United States. It began as a tribute to fallen DEA special agent Enrique Camerena in 1985. According to the United States DEA, Red Ribbon Week is the nations largest and longest-running drug awareness and prevention program. Red Ribbon Week began after the kidnapping, torture, and murder of DEA agent Enrique "Kiki" Camarena in 1985. After the men were found murdered, citizens in Camarena's hometown of Calexico, California donned red ribbons in his honor. The red ribbon became their symbol for prevention in order to reduce the demand of illegal drugs. California Congressman Duncan Hunter and teacher David Dhillon launched "Camarena Clubs" in California high schools. “Camerana Club” was later recognized as Red Ribbon Week.

*Reminder* Football practice is officially starting today! We will start at 4:00 p.m., on the football field. Players need to be at the school by 3:45 to get helmets, cleats and mouth pieces. Players CANNOT practice unless I have their physical, PHYSICALLY in my hands. If you do not have a physical completed by 3:45 today, you are still required to be at practice, supporting your teammates and learning. Not having a physical is NOT a free pass to skip practice. After practice, at 6:30 in the band room, we are having our Football Rules and Expectations meeting that parents/guardians, and players, NEED to attend! Please be present in order to go through the rule book and sign it and ask any questions you may have about practices, games, the season, or the program in general. Coach Hudnall

Football Parents and Players,  The time has finally arrived! We are starting practice TUESDAY, AUGUST 13th at 4:00 P.M. This is MANDATORY! The season is starting and you need to be there; dressed in shorts, t-shirts, cleats, and helmets. There will be a MANDATORY parent/guardian and players meeting following practice at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday night, August 13th, in the band room to discuss football rules, guidelines, and expectations. You will all receive a rules booklet and parents/guardians will need to sign these after we go through them.  Also, PHYSICALS NEED TO BE COMPLETED BY TUESDAY! You need these done before you are allowed to practice. That gives you an entire day Monday to get them done, so get them done. Each day a physical or rule booklet is not turned in - signed by parents/guardians - equals extra conditioning for that player starting August 14th. Support them and be at the meeting!  Football season is here, LET'S GO!!!!  Coach Hudnall

ATTENTION FOOTBALL PLAYERS AND PARENTS Camp went very well and the coaches are excited to get the season started. Practice can officially start August 12th, and we will either start the 12th or the 13th (stay tuned on that, it will be announced). Before we start, ALL players need to get a physical, and they need a parent/guardian present for it! Do this NOW, so it is taken care of before the day we start practice. Please, please, PLEASE - GET YOUR PHYSICALS!!!!! Secondly - Starting next Monday, July 29th, we will be having Team Conditioning Monday-Wednesday-Friday until August 9th. Conditioning will start at 7 p.m. in the evening and last between a half hour to an hour. We need everyone there in order to be prepared for preseason practice. SHOW UP! Finally, parents and community members - push these boys. Encourage them to get to conditioning and to go out for football. We were missing about 12-15 boys at camp still. They are needed and a valuable part of the team, program, our plans as coaches, and could ALL be great players. - Coach Hudnall

That's a wrap! Chiefs Football Camp finished up Friday night. It ended just as hot as it started! But, that is July in Nebraska and that is football. These young men got a taste of what the football teams across the state fight through to compete at a championship level. The coaches are extremely proud of those who showed up, put in the work, fought the heat and outside distractions, and got better for their school and community. We may have found a captain or two. Times are changing. The program is changing. These gentlemen were pushed and they didn't quit. They earned those shirts and, hopefully, your respect and support for the upcoming season. Next up, conditioning, and practice starts the second week of August. Stay tuned. Rep the Tribe! Go Chiefs! Coach Hudnall

Attention all football parents/players! Little Chiefs camp ends today and high schoolers are hitting the halfway point of their camp. A couple things coaches would like to remind you all of: - Varsity camp starts at 5:30 (boys will be on the field by 5:15) and end around 7:30 the next 3 days. - Weights tomorrow and Friday will start at 3:30 for football players and 4:00 on Thursday. - We can NOT stress enough to get your boys drinking water at all times! It is hot. Summer in July, in Nebraska, is VERY hot. If our athletes aren't drinking water, they will be dehydrated and get sick, no matter how hot it is or what they are doing. - Trust us. We are going to take care of these young men. We are ending earlier, taking longer water breaks, taking breaks in the shade, etc. They are doing an amazing job! Be proud of them, we coaches ALL are. As always, Rep the Tribe and help us get these young MEN to finish strong! Coach Hudnall

Ms. Nichols' 5th grade students have been learning about the different spheres and how they interact with one another. They made habitats and then the students presented them to our class and told about all of the sphere interactions within their habitats.

The 8th grade had a great time at the Wayne State College Planetarium on Friday, April 5th. They first went to the A. Jewell Schock Museum of Natural History where they were given a tour by Ms. Kneifl's daughter. The Museum of Natural History houses over 15,000 specimens of birds, mammals, invertebrates, plants and fossils. The Museum was created by Jewell Schock, a former Zoologist at Wayne State College. The students got to see the prep-room where the items that are brought into the museum are prepared for display and they are tagged and documented. Students were allowed to touch the displays and play in the geographic sand table that showed water levels and mountain peaks. There was also a table where students could view snake skins, fossils and other animal and plant objects under a mircroscope. Then the class went to the Fred G. Dale Planetarium and they received a special show about what it takes to be an astronaut to correlate with their previous novel, "Hidden Figures" by Margot Lee Shetterly. Students received a snack, a real shark tooth and a Wayne State College wristband, along with some conservation wildlife buttons, lunch was in the student center, and the class took a break at Bressler Park before returning to school.

UNPS has a partnership with the Kennedy Arts Center. This has granted us recent visits from amazing artists Daniel Martinez (Musician) and Heather Henson, daughter of Jim Henson (Creator of Sesame Street), and artist Renee Saunsoci. Our students are so talented in the ARTS!
